Captivity

“…bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ…” 2 Corinthians 10:5

I so often get myself in trouble because I’m quick to act (or react) without thinking. I speak before I think…and usually end up having to apologize. I react out of emotion…and usually feel remorse later.

Oswald Chambers describes my tendency: “We take every thought or project that comes to us by impulse and jump into action immediately, instead of imprisoning and disciplining ourselves to obey Christ.”

I am challenged by the idea that every project or thought doesn’t necessarily require my immediate action. On the contrary, it doesn’t allow me to make room for laziness or procrastination, but it does solicit a need for me to be aware that thinking through something first ushers God’s will for following through. This is in place of my own desire to be “on top of things” which typically results in my human nature superseding God’s will.

When I am transformed by the renewing of my mind (Romans 12:2), I am able to bring everything before God – bringing every thought into captivity – so I’m not just acting or reacting on my own impulse, but I am obedient to God and His will.
