O Christmas Tree

First of all, I know what you're thinking. It's November 17th. Yes, it is. And yes, I put up the Christmas tree - and a few of my decorative snowman. And the wreath on the door. Yes, I did. Don't judge. I have perfectly good reasoning, including the sheer fact that we will be gone next week and I won't have a chance to do it after Thanksgiving. Not to mention the reality that I have now discovered two local radio stations playing Christmas music 24/7 and the XM station "Holly" has appeared. So it was settled. Christmas at the Barnhouse home.

And I should tell you we have a "mixed" audience. Of course Scrooge, otherwise known as my husband, thinks it's ridiculously early. And then there's the wee one - who literally squealed in delight at the sight of the fully lit and decorated tree.

I take great pride in decorating the tree. My method includes unwrapping each ornament and sorting them out on the floor. Almost every one has a story. So many were gifts from friends and family, usually marked with a year that it was received. There's of course the ornament I purchased from the Godparent Home the year we waited and prayed for our miracle. Then there are all the "Baby's First Christmas" ornaments we received last year. A special one from my parents that represents our first home. Each one tells a story and is connected to a memory. I carefully select and place each one. The top of the tree has significant meaning, housing all of Elijah's first Christmas ornaments he received last year as well as the angel that rests on top.

Last year I wrote to you about my new perspective because a "baby changes everything." I suppose it's the magic of the season - the nostalgia of the Christmas story - the reminder that especially at this time of year, I am thankful. As we approach Thanksgiving - just 9 days away - I am mindful of the great blessing we have received. With Christmas only 5 weeks away, I am not quick to forget the miracle of a life that forever changed the world.

Please know this is just the beginning. I can't wait to experience the holiday season with a budding toddler who is so aware of his surroundings. To see the joy he receives from the twinkling lights and the shiny ornaments - to experience Christmas and be reminded of what it was like through the wonderment of a child. I am beyond blessed. So yes, it is November 17th and my Christmas tree is up. But I simply couldn't wait to celebrate the season and all that it means.
